OUR HISTORY

In the 1970s, Cuba, through a commercial agreement, exported 40 tons of human placenta to MERIUX Laboratories in France, at the same time Dr. Carlos Manuel Miyares Cao, a doctor specializing in Gynecology and Pharmacology at the medical school from the University of Havana discovered a substance with activity that stimulates skin pigmentation, studying the metabolism of placentas kept alive under laboratory conditions.
The successful use in Cuba of said substance in the treatment of the dermatological disease, known as vitiligo, determined that in the years (1980)-(1982) placenta exports to France were suspended when the national pharmaceutical industry began the production of the new drug known by the name of Melagenina for distribution in pharmacies by prescription.

In 1985 it was necessary to create the first international vitiligo patient care service at the “Cira García” Central Clinic in Havana City under the responsibility of Dr. Miyares himself, such was the influx of patients from countries near Cuba (México , Venezuela, Colombia) that gave rise to the establishment of the first health tourism system through the CUBATUR Company.

In 1986, as a consequence of the international repercussion caused by the new Cuban method of treating Vitiligo as a medicine obtained from the human placenta, the Council of State founded on April 25, the Placental Histotherapy Center under the direction of Dr. Carlos Manuel Miyares Cao with the aim of expanding these investigations.

In 1987 it is necessary to establish the national and international clinical service of the center due to the increase in the number of vitiligo patients requesting care in Cuba with the new drug with patients from more than 90 countries; as well as, to provide coverage to those affected by said disease in Cuba. From 1988 to 1991, centers for the care of these patients began to be established in other countries, thus beginning the export of Melagenina.
The medical staff of these Centers received training at the Placental Histotherapy Center to ensure that the application of the method achieved the same effectiveness as in Cuba.
Thus, the centers of the Canary Islands (Spain), the Republic of San Marino, Madrid, Spain were established; Brazil; Bogota Colombia; México City, México; Lima, Peru; Nicaragua; The Savior; Entre Rios, Argentina; Kyiv, Ukraine; Moscow and Petrograd in Russia; Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan; Riga, Latvia; Niger, Africa.
In this stage, 30 associations of Vitiligo patients called Associations of Friends against vitiligo were founded, made up of patients who requested the introduction of the Cuban medicine in their respective countries.

From 1992 to 1994, the need to build a plant to obtain various medicines obtained from the human placenta was assessed, which materialized in 1995.

The Placental Histotherapy Center not only produced Melagenin, since the research carried out by Dr. Miyares Cao and his team had managed to obtain useful medicines for other pathologies and a line of highly effective cosmetics to slow down the cellular aging process.

In the years from 1970 to 1980 the following products were developed:

– Melagenin (medicine for the treatment of vitiligo).
– Coriodermina (medicine for the treatment of psoriasis).
– Piloactive Lotion (democosmetic for the treatment of alopecia).

In the years from 1980 to 1994 the following products were developed:

Thromboplastin (blood coagulation).
– Ophthalmic anti-inflammatory (ophthalmopathy).
– Dietary supplement (osteoporosis-anemia).
– Placenta Shampoo.
– Dermal Bioactivating Cream (dermotrophic).
– Dermal Bioactivating Gel.
– Photoprotective Gel.
– Amniotic Collagen Cream.
– Hair conditioner.
– Facial Toners.
– Cleansing Milks.
– Dermal Bioactivating Soap.
– Melagenina Plus and Forte (optimization of vitiligo treatment).
– Enteral feeding (intensive therapy).
– Pulmonary surfactant (Neonatology).
– Placental Lactogen (Obstetrics).

Following the creation of the Group of Biotechnological and Pharmaceutical Industries in abbreviated form BioCubaFarma, the merger of the budgeted units Plant of Derivatives of the Placenta and Center of Placental Histotherapy, and the conversion of the latter into a company, was approved in June 2013. .

In April 2017, the aforementioned name was changed, to henceforth be named the  Placental Histotherapy Center “Dr. Carlos Manuel Miyares Cao” in honor of its Founding Director who died on August 1, 2015.
